Dr. Kiran Prabhakar Rebello: Redefining the Role of a Modern Surgeon

Dr. Kiran Prabhakar Rebello has spent her career proving that a doctor can create an influence far beyond the walls of an operating theatre. As an Associate Professor in the Department of General Surgery at Autonomous State Medical College, Sultanpur, she divides her time between patient care, teaching, research, medical writing, and public health awareness. Her journey has never been confined to performing surgeries alone. From the very beginning, she believed that sharing knowledge with young doctors and educating the public could improve countless lives. That belief gradually shaped a career built on service, education, and surgical excellence.

Growing up in a family that valued discipline, education, and service, Dr. Kiran developed a deep sense of responsibility toward society. Medicine became her chosen profession because it gave her the chance to heal people directly. At the same time, she wanted to educate, guide, and encourage people to make informed health decisions while helping young medical professionals build confidence in their careers. That mindset encouraged her to look beyond clinical practice and address gaps through education and awareness.

One area that demanded attention was the lack of public understanding about preventable surgical conditions, breast cancer, and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Kiran saw patients reaching hospitals without enough awareness about symptoms or timely treatment. She also noticed that young doctors needed stronger academic guidance beyond textbooks. Along with treating patients, she became involved in academic seminars, health awareness programs, medical writing, motivational sessions, and surgical education, reaching both patients and future medical professionals.

The early years were far from easy. General Surgery has long been seen as a field dominated by men, and earning acceptance demanded years of dedication. Alongside demanding surgical training, she balanced family life, academics, and motherhood. Rather than allowing difficult moments to slow her down, Dr. Kiran kept improving her skills and continued learning. Every challenge strengthened both her confidence and her ability to care for patients with greater understanding.

Completing her MS in General Surgery laid the base for everything that followed. Fellowships such as FAIS and FMAS expanded her knowledge in advanced surgical care. Joining Autonomous State Medical College as an Associate Professor gave her the opportunity to combine teaching with clinical practice. Publishing books, mentoring students, receiving national honours, and speaking at academic events gradually added new chapters to her professional journey.

Unlike many businesses that rely on advertising, medicine depends on trust earned over time. Dr. Kiran built her reputation through ethical practice, honest communication, and positive patient experiences. Recommendations from recovered patients, along with respect from fellow doctors, researchers, and students, widened her reach. "Skill may make you a surgeon, but compassion makes you a great doctor," she says, a belief that continues to guide her daily work.

Taking on several responsibilities at once was one of the biggest decisions of her career. She chose not only to remain a surgeon but also to become a teacher, author, researcher, and public speaker. Managing these roles demanded discipline and sacrifice, yet it allowed her work to touch far more lives than surgery alone could. Her style of leadership is rooted in integrity, empathy, teamwork, and continuous learning.

Beyond the operating theatre, lecture hall, and research publications, Dr. Kiran embraces her most cherished role, that of a loving and devoted mother. While balancing the demanding responsibilities of being an Associate Professor of General Surgery and an accomplished surgeon, she has always ensured that her family remains at the heart of her life. As the mother of twin sons, Aarvik and Aayansh, she believes parenting is built on love, discipline, values, and leading by example. She encourages curiosity, kindness, hard work, and respect, inspiring her children to dream big while staying grounded in humility and compassion. Despite her busy schedule, she makes quality time with her children a priority through everyday moments, celebrations, travel, reading, and school activities. She also teaches them empathy through her own example as a doctor. For Dr. Kiran, success is measured not only by professional achievements but also by raising children with strong moral values, resilience, and a commitment to making a positive difference in society. She believes motherhood has made her a more compassionate doctor, a more patient teacher, and a stronger human being. To her, motherhood is life's greatest blessing and the foundation that gives purpose to every achievement.

Family has remained a steady source of encouragement throughout her journey. Their understanding during demanding years of training gave her the confidence to continue growing both personally and professionally. When asked about achievements, she speaks less about awards and more about patients who recover well and students who become capable doctors. "Success is not measured by awards but by the number of lives you heal, inspire, and uplift," she says. As she continues writing, teaching, researching, and spreading awareness about preventive healthcare, Dr. Kiran hopes her work leaves behind generations of skilled surgeons who carry compassion into every operating room, along with patients whose lives have been changed through knowledge as much as treatment.
