Paromita Majumder Left IT to Build a Tea Brand: The Story Behind Tea Buddies
Updated: 3 hours ago
For Paromita Majumder, entrepreneurship did not begin with an early dream of starting a company. An IT professional and former SAP Lead, she spent years carrying the pressure of corporate life alongside an abusive marriage, insults from in laws, the loss of both parents and deep emotional isolation. With no professional mentors to guide her, she drew strength from the Universe, Sai Ram and Jai Jagannath. When her marriage ended, she became a single mother responsible for her son and household.
Soon after, losing both parents left her mentally, physically and financially burdened. Corporate life no longer felt sustainable.
For three to four years, Paromita quietly planned a different life, wanting to combine her corporate experience with a genuine passion. Tea became that choice. “You may love tea or hate it, but you cannot ignore it,” she says, pointing to its place in the daily lives of millions.
That idea became Tea Buddies, a premium tea startup built around 100 percent pure, authenticated, single origin teas sourced directly from Himalayan and Darjeeling gardens. Today, the boutique brand offers more than 56 curated varieties, including Darjeeling Nimbu Spice, Spring Moon Drop, Premium First Flush and Oolong Tea. The purpose goes beyond selling tea, with a focus on stress reduction, wellness, authenticity and consumer education.
The early years brought difficult sourcing, seasonal uncertainty, weather changes, remote estate logistics and the challenge of maintaining consistent quality. Reaching customers beyond the local market was another hurdle, with large tea companies holding far bigger marketing budgets. Paromita also had to shift from defined corporate roles to handling inventory, regulatory requirements, marketing and customer relationships herself.
Her breakthrough came through the Pointers Business Forum, her South Point High School alumni network, followed by ex colleagues, local PR and community connections. An awareness session at Nandan led to coverage in Hello Kolkata, while her appearance as a Special Guest at Press Club Kolkata added visibility.
She also took major risks by leaving IT, sourcing directly and investing in a physical Experience Centre where customers could learn about tea varieties, brewing methods and the differences between First Flush and Second Flush teas.
Her leadership centres on conscious values, humility, learning, mentoring and social responsibility. Her parents remain an internal source of strength. The losses taught her to guard trust carefully, keep family close, work hard and have faith in God. For Paromita, the achievements that matter most are authenticity, education, consumer wellbeing and, above all, inner peace.
